| The Tao of Private Instruction By Peggy Wheeler, Level 4 Instructor Private lessons with my Tae Kwon do instructor helped me to practice and understand the movements and philosophies that seemed to "go so fast" during the group lessons. At every level I benefited by the one-on-one time that allowed me to review the basics and nail the new movements required for advancement. Preparing for my 1st Dan Black Belt test required an essay and speech reflecting on the journey to this "beginning point" and clarity of intent for future practice...clarity of intent brought me to the realization that I really would like to study and, perhaps, teach Tai Chi. So, I found a "private instructor" and spent at least an hour daily for 6 months studying the basics. He came to my home and was very patient, always willing to repeat what I had not understood. There was no rush to compete with others or complete the lessons by an artificial deadline; only my goals and intent were considered. He assigned reading and suggested movies to further my understanding of Tai Chi. Soon it was apparent that it would take me a long while to master much of the art my private instructor made readily accessible to me and I could not keep how wonderful I felt to myself...my intent had clarified...I wanted to test as an instructor and hone my skills while sharing with others. My instructor agreed I was ready to test. I met Master Peter Hill, in person, for the first time at the June 2004 Instructors Workshop in Arizona. It felt like I had known him for a long time though because he was my "private instructor" by way of Distance Learning. Yes! I had used World Tai Chi Association's tapes and DVD's for months to prepare and received my Level 3 certification at the workshop. Yes, it was exactly like having a private instructor in my home working with me on my schedule at my pace...helping me (sometimes over and over, through rewind or reverse) to properly prepare, to make the most of face-time with Master Instructors, to meet other like-minded students, and abundantly gain a return on the investment (time and money) I had made on myself. Now, I have the tapes/DVD's to review before I teach anyone so that I have every confidence I am giving them a content-rich certified program. Plus, it is nice to hear Master Hill's voice telling me I can do whatever I want in this world with a loving heart when I g.e.t.i.t. together! If you have it in your intent to learn Tai Chi and gain the great benefits of this wonderful art, then try the tapes/DVD's and written materials that g.e.t.i.t. and World Tai Chi offer...compared with what you get and how it can aid you in your study of the Tai Chi art now and in the future, it will be more than worth your investment.
